Ever since I arrived in the Netherlands in 2017, Glow Eindhoven has been an event that has captivated me. This festival of lights and art, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, transforms Eindhoven into a true open-air museum, reflecting the city’s innovative essence. Known as the Dutch “Silicon Valley”, Eindhoven is home to major technology companies and a design hub. During Glow, the city’s creative spirit is manifested through impressive light installations, which transform streets, buildings and public spaces into a journey of art and innovation.
This year, Glow reaches its 19th edition with a shorter route, but packed with intense experiences. The route has been strategically shortened to provide a more intense immersion, allowing visitors to explore each installation without getting lost or missing out on the beauty of each work. With the theme of 80 years of Eindhoven’s liberation, Glow 2024 is not only a festival of lights, but also a celebration of the city’s history and resilience, paying homage to the period of World War II and the freedom it won.
A walk through Glow is more than just a stroll; it’s a journey through a narrative that’s both historical and futuristic. The works not only portray the city’s past, but also explore themes of hope, unity and the promise of a bright future. The installations range from sci-fi-inspired sculptures, such as extraterrestrial “slime blobs”, to towers that “come to life” in a spectacle of light and movement. The streets and buildings of Eindhoven are transformed into a vibrant, interactive canvas, attracting visitors from around the world.
However, the new route has brought a challenge for residents of the city’s traditional De Bergen district. With the change in pedestrian flow direction, residents now have to drive against the flow of visitors, which some have described as “chaotic” and even “dangerous”. This raises questions about the impact of Glow not only on tourism and culture, but also on urban dynamics and the safety of residents, reflecting how much the event is an integral part of life in Eindhoven.
For those who, like me, witness Glow year after year, the experience goes far beyond the lights. This festival encapsulates the vibrant energy of Eindhoven, its ability to unite technology and art in a public space, and the warm welcome of a city that prides itself on innovation. Walking through Glow is like connecting with the soul of Eindhoven, experiencing firsthand the past, present and future of a city that always looks to tomorrow.
