Visa to WORK in the Netherlands

For all those who, like me (before 2023), do not have European citizenship, to get a job in the Netherlands you need a visa: the MVV (Machtiging voorlopig verblijf), a (temporary) long-term visa. See below how it works.

Long-stay visa (MVV)

If you want to stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days, you may need a residence permit. In many cases, you will also have to apply for a long-stay visa before traveling to the Netherlands. In Brazil, you can apply for this visa at the Dutch consulate-general in São Paulo.

How much does the visa cost?

  • Work visa (also for highly qualified immigrants): € 345 euros
  • Au pair and Cultural Exchange programs: € 207
  • For companion (married or in a stable union): € 207
  • Child (under 18 years old): € 69
  • Studies (for researchers or to seek employment after studies): € 207 euros

See more about values on the IND website. The so-called short-stay visa is not yet required for Brazilians, with it, you can stay in the Netherlands for 90 days.

How to apply for a residence permit and an MVV

You can apply for a residence permit and an MVV in two ways:

1. Through a host in the Netherlands (such as an employer, family member, or educational institution) personally at a Dutch embassy or consulate-general.

If you have a host in the Netherlands, in most cases, your host will have to submit the application to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).

Your host can submit the application directly to the IND. How they need to do this depends on the reason why you need a residence permit and/or an MVV, for example, to work or study. The IND website has a list of the documents your host will need to provide. It also explains how your host can apply for your residence permit. If you have any questions about this, you can contact the IND.

Depending on the purpose of your stay, your host may have to submit the application in the Netherlands. This applies if the purpose of your stay is to:

  • study
  • work
  • an internship
  • live together or marry someone who lives in the Netherlands
  • family reunification

In these cases, your host will be an educational institution, your employer, a family member, or your spouse or partner.

The following stay purposes will need to submit your MVV and residence permit application:

  • orientation year as a highly skilled migrant looking for employment
  • independent entrepreneur
  • starting entrepreneur (start-up)
  • foreign investor
